Scott Fitzgerald who wrote “The Great Gatsby” would be delighted to know his novel of Flappers, Molls, Gangsters, Prohibition, is still so well-known and read!!. On Sunday 18th January at the Caloundra Power Boat Club the SCJC invited THE BOWERY HOT FIVE to reproduce in music the same period.
Well, with MAL leading his cohorts and hitting high high notes and finger stopping cadenzas, RODNEY on drums and vocals keeping the guys steady, DAVID keyboards with a lovely touch and style, JOHN with his acoustic and electric always excites with great solos, then PAUL one of the best reed men around, so lyrical are his solos, you know we are in for an afternoon of music, fun, laughter and just pure enjoyment.
The opening “Chinatown” set the pace. ROD sang a Fat’s “Ain't Misbehaving”, then a hot swinging “Sweet Georgie Brown”. Song after song followed with some repartee from the boys followed, then just before a break MAL swung into a solid “Mack The Knife”. A rest, a raffle then POW the guys are into it again.
The open set was a beauty DAVID on keyboards ably supported by JOHN and ROD played for a special person the beautiful ballad “You Don't Know What Love Is”. MAL's “Hello Dolly” reminded us of the great LOUIS. PAUL serenaded with the Acker Bilk “Stranger On The Shore”, as always to a nice applause! ROD tricked with a Cha Cha version of FAT'S “Honeysuckle Rose”. Unfortunately, time always says” Near The End”. So, what better way to finish than to help with some audience vocals “When The Saints Go Marching In”.
Another afternoon of music, fun, laughter, to keep us leave with smiles. Thanks BOWERY HOT FIVE!
